The easiest way to succeed as a woman in a male-dominated industry is to be authentic. I spent years trying to fit in with the guys, and I never quite pulled it off, for some reason. I find myself fitting better into a groove that’s just my own. This is not a novel idea—just one it took me a long time to learn.
Thank God for one of the most influential women of the last century, according to Time magazine, Coco Chanel. Coco’s fashion-forward thinking liberated women from the corset. She also freed women from the constraints placed on them by societal norms, saying things like “Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself” and “the most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.”
She’s the reason we can wear pants to work today, and Coco knew one thing very well. In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.
Instead of trying to fit in with the guys in my 99% male-dominated occupational role, I am working on standing out by attracting more women to the field. And I’m encouraging all of you with yet another Coco Chanel quote. “A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.” You go girl! Stand up and stand out!
